P-Wave Microseism Source Areas: Tracking Tropical Cyclones
نویسندگان
چکیده
8 Nonlinear wave-wave interactions generate double-frequency (DF) microseisms, 9 which include both surface waves (mainly Rayleigh-type) and compressional (P) waves. 10 Although it is unclear whether DF surface waves generated in deep oceans are observed 11 on land, we show that DF P waves generated under Super Typhoon Ioke far offshore are 12 detected by beamforming of land-based seismic array data, allowing tropical cyclones to 13 be well-tracked seismologically. Two distinct spectral bands associated with different 14 microseismic P-wave source locations are observed. The short-period DF band (~ 0.16– 15 0.35 Hz) is dominated by P waves generated in the deep ocean by local wind seas near 16 the storm. In contrast, P waves in the long-period DF band (~ 0.1–0.15 Hz) are weaker 17 and generated closer to the coast of Japan from swell interactions. The accurate 18 identification of DF P-wave microseism source areas is necessary to image Earth 19 structure using ambient noise.

متن کاملThe near-coastal microseism spectrum: Spatial and temporal wave climate relationships
[1] Comparison of the ambient noise data recorded at near-coastal ocean bottom and inland seismic stations at the Oregon coast with both offshore and nearshore buoy data shows that the near-coastal microseism spectrum results primarily from nearshore gravity wave activity. Low double-frequency (DF), microseism energy is observed at near-coastal locations when seas nearby are calm, even when ver...
متن کاملAttributing Tropical Cyclogenesis to Equatorial Waves in the Western North Pacific
Tropical cyclogenesis is attributed to an equatorial wave when the filtered rainfall anomaly exceeds a threshold value at the genesis location. It is argued that 0 mm day (simply requiring a positive anomaly) is too small a threshold because unrelated noise can produce a positive anomaly. A threshold of 6 mm day is too large because two-thirds of storms would have no precursor disturbance. Betw...
متن کاملShallow-water seismoacoustic noise generated by tropical storms Ernesto and Florence.
Land-based seismic observations of double frequency (DF) microseisms generated during tropical storms Ernesto and Florence are dominated by signals in the 0.15-0.5 Hz band. In contrast, data from sea floor hydrophones in shallow water (70 m depth, 130 km off the New Jersey coast) show dominant signals in the ocean gravity-wave frequency band, 0.02-0.18 Hz, and low amplitudes from 0.18 to 0.3 Hz...
متن کاملWhen Katrina hit California
[1] Beamforming of seismic noise recorded on 150 Southern California stations was used to identify body and surface waves generated by Katrina. Surface wave microseisms are commonly associated with oceanic storms; there are no previous comprehensive body wave observations. The temporal evolution of the surface and body waves was different, indicating a different source mechanism for the two wav...
